Our ‘Next Steps’

Overview: Next Steps Convention focuses on Australia’s future and the next steps for empowered communities. It will concentrate on practical advice and case studies and provide options for sharing networks, experience and resources to build community and participate in Australian politics.

The extensive program will include actionable ideas for working with MPs, the role of shadow representatives, sharing knowledge and skills about getting community independents elected at future election/s, how to get going and skills for group survival, as well as opportunities to work with peak bodies and community groups to influence policy.

Background: In February 2021 the Community Independents Project (CIP) held the ‘Getting Elected’ Convention with over 72 electorates represented. This landmark event heralded the unprecedented number of community independents elected to parliament, a paradigm shift in Australian politics, activated and passionate communities wanting a new way of doing politics with genuine representation by their MP on issues that matter to them. Convention 21 was hosted by Indi with input from a local reference group. Warringah is convening Convention 22 and the program is similarly being co-designed with support from a community based reference group.
